Drone attacks in Pakistan:-
The United States administration, led by the Central Intelligence Agencys Special Activities Division, has made a series of attacks on targets in northwest Pakistansince 2004 using drones (unmanned transmitting aerial vehicles).[3] These attacks argon part of the US War on Terrorism campaign, seeking to thwarting Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants in Pakistan.[3] Most of these attacks are on targets in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas along the Afghan border in Northwest Pakistan.
These strikes are carried out by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and have increased substantially under the Presidency of Barack Obama.[4][5] principally the UAVs used are MQ-1 Predator and more recently MQ-9 reaper firing AGM-114 Hellfire missiles. The drones have become a weapon system of choice for the United States in the fight against al-Qaeda.[6] Some media match to the series of attacks as adrone war.[7][8] Pakistans government publicly condemns these attacks but has secretly shared intelligence with Americans[9] and alike allegedly allowed the drones to operate from Shamsi Airfield in Pakistan until 21 April 2011 when cl Americans left the base.[10]
Assessments of the results of the attacks differ.
[11] Daniel Byman from theBrookings Institution suggests that drone strikes may kill 10 or so civilians for every militant killed.[12] In contrast, the tonic America Foundation has estimated that 80 percent of those killed in the attacks were militants.[13] The Pakistani military has stated that most of those killed were hardcore Al-Qaeda and Taliban militants.[14]The authority of Investigative Journalism based on extensive inquiry found that at least 385 civilians were among the dead out of a total of between 1658 and 2597 killed.[15] The CIA believes that the strikes conducted since May 2010 have killed over 600 militants and non caused any civilian fatalities.[11]
