China took pride in large, hard working families that would populate their country. In 1953 Chinas population increased to 583 million people. For the Chinese, they believed that more people equalled more power, which is true in some cases. The years 1958-1961 where known to the Chinese as the Great Leap Forward, because these years heavily stress economic success. The communist government worried that factory takings could not increase with out more man power.
