In the put-on Othelloby William Shakespeare jealousy is the key focus of the play. At the start the auditory sense is introduced to the true protagonist of the play, the iniquitous Iago. The key character of the play, Othello, is interposed after into the play. The fact that the intent of Iago is shown becomes ironic when he is on infinite occasions referred to as “true Iago.” Shakespeare also creates irony when he gives the line “Men should be what they seem…” to Iago.
When Iago says “Men should be what they seem; Or those that be not, would might seem none!” the irony really stands out. “O, beware, my lord, of jealousy; It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on: that cuckold lives in bliss who, certain of his fate, loves not his wronger; But, O, what unlucky minutes tells her o’er who dotes, yet doubts, suspects, yet potently loves.” This is the ultimate irony of the play. The quote said by Iago during a conversation with Othello about jealousy shows Iago warning Othello of jealousy and reactions it may cause, Iago strongly warns about the jealousy of a man who strongly loves his wife, and that it ordain cause great grief. The irony shown is that Iago warns Othello of exactly what will happen. Iago knows that when his plan unfolds that Iago will become increasingly jealous of his wife.
