The society of England in the 16th century was rife with problems. Enclosure of land (while important for the later Industrial Revolution) forced many peasants off the land and into cities, where they suffered in poverty. Many people thus often did not have enough to eat, which was heavily contrasted by the lavish lifestyles of those of status. Due to the general poverty and joblessness, crime was rampant, especially thievery (for which the punishment was often death). In response to these problems, Thomas More in 1516 wrote the treatise Utopia. In Utopia, More writes to address the issues of vagrancy, religious unrest, and societal disharmony in English society during his time, a goal he achieves (in the context of Utopian society), but at a cost. Vagrancy and idleness was a prevalent issue in 16th century. Due to the shortage of work available, many a man would sit about being unproductive (which often lead to committing crimes when combined with poverty). Priestly makes the audience feel as if the inspector is a trustworthy character since he gives him the role of hero as is he is trying to solve the murder mystery. So when Priestly brings out a point or an accusation against one of the characters, the audience are more likely to believe the inspector rather than Mr.Birling. The Inspector believes that we are all responsible for each other. This places him in the position of a caring character which is vital for his role as an inspector. Priestly portrays Mr.Birlings views of the world as incorrect and makes him look foolish. The audience then feel that if Mr.Birlings predictions are incorrect then why should they trust his right-wing view of the world? This certifies that the play is biased and is very supportive towards Left-Wing views. This specific tactics that Priestly uses is very foolish to right-wing views. Mr.Birling is portrayed as ignorant and a bad judge. Mr.Birling quotes that the way some of these cranks talk right now; youd think everybody has to look aster everybody else.
