In Robert Pirsig’s novel Zen and the Art of motorbike Maintenance, the first question a reader has is, “is this daybook just about motorcycle’s or Zen?” The answer is both; Pirsig believes that a motorcyclist should confine basic knowledge of his machine as to maintain the machine’s quality. The book is structured around the motorcycle trip through the midwestern United States that Pirsig and his thirteen year old son, Chris be taking on with their friends John and Sylvia Sutherland. The story unfolds with the philosophy and cross country excursion intertwining. What took me a age to understand is that the philosophical aspect is genuinely in part a biography of Phaedrus, supposedly mean wolf in Greek, the person the narrator was before the slimy of a psychotic break. Classical is best defined by Pirsig as facts, science, and intellect, while romantic is defined as emotion, similarity, and intuition. This can also be viewed as more left-brained and more right-brained ways of thinking. To me these views of the world are very true, because everyone in the world is either right or left brained.
