The number of veracity TV shows continues to grow: whacking sidekick; Celebrity Big Brother; Im a celebrity get me out of here; Survivor; come-on Island; The Bachelor; Joe Millionaire… and on and on. As Mike Frost says: Big Brother is about as uninteresting as reality TV gets, and yet, particularly in the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia,and even Canada, it has rated systematically well, especially among younger audiences. This tells us that younger children sit down and watch Big Brother, a show where people feed in lust after just meeting them and sleep in each others bed. It doesnt show the children that is isnt right and that they shouldnt do it. true it doesnt say anything about it, at all.
So why does Reality TV work?
What makes it so popular? And from the point of conniption of a viewer is it just harmless fun, or is it perilous and destructive? Many people, including myself argue that it is harmful because of its unreality, its over-simplifications, and its moral emptiness.
We know much about whats happening in the on-screen lives of the contestants than we do about the real-world people next door to us, our own neighbours. We talk in first-name foothold about them, as if we actually knew them. So Reality TV works by creating a sense of community. But its a false sense of community.
